Check a few different excel files, just to be sure it isn't the file itself, as it's possible that a very large file would freeze the program. Also try downloading the file and opening it locally, see if that crashes the program.

If you've still got issues, maybe contact Microsoft and see if they have any patches to deal with what might be compatibility issues.
