The referendum in Puerto Rico was, as I recall, indecisive. The first question had to do with whether people wanted a change in the status with the U.S.

A narrow majority said yes. When asked what that change should be (ranging from statehood through independence), there was no clear consensus.

@realjohnboy,
... and, it's a non-binding referendum I read.

@hawkeye10,
If nothing else, all residents will begin paying federal income tax. As it stands, only US Government employees are subject to the tax. This might partly explain the narrow votes on statehood.

@farmerman,
Hey farmerman, the election is over. It's okay to go back to 50 states.

I don't get where 58 comes from. If the 8 was a typo, it would say 58st.

@wandeljw,
It refers to a misstatement by Obama, I'm sure. Now that the election is over, we can drop the hype and go back to 50.

sure, because it sure looks like they get most of the benefits of being citizens while paying only a small portion of the costs the rest of us do, which as we know from our public debts is in itself deeply discounted from what these support programs cost.

@roger,
I think it was in 2008 (or this campaign) Obama while exhausted from his campaign schedule made a slip of the tongue refrring ti gis vistin 57 states with only one to go. His staff kept Alaska and Hawaii off his travel list. He was referring to his campaign visits in the 48 contiguous States with only one left.

@farmerman,
I think that we should give them one more chance to vote themselves into the US. Failing to do that. Kick their province status from under their feet.

No more Made in the US products would then come from there. No more violating labor laws that apply in the 50 states and that don't qualify there because it isn't a state.

Pierluisi stressed that these are funds assigned to the island by the federal government and are not generated by Puerto Ricans.

The official estimated at $7 billion the sum of federal funds apportioned to Puerto Rico each year under the 2009 American Recovery and Reconstruction Act.

stimulus to people who mostly dont pay taxes thus are not responsible for paying the bill like we are ..makes perfect sense dont it...

No opinion yet. We do like to have places near us connected in some way. Consider the fuss about Cuba. I can assume they might have other reasons than tax not to vote to be a state (but I haven't read about all that for quite a while).

@Ragman,
Ragman. Try to keep up. Sometimes we want a reasonable explanation; sometimes we would rather have fun.

@hawkeye10,
The "curvelinear" area between Cuba and Aruba is , possibly an untapped deep source of petroleum and gas. Its an area that been squozen during the collision of Sa and Central America.
Lots of possible oil basins. Theyre pretty much done screwing around off Cuba and I think that the fields to the N (the deept fields) and to the South (shallower AND deep fields can be exploited further
