People, please don't answer this. This questions this fella has been asking reek of wannabe script-kiddie hacker.

He'll say it's not meant for nefarious use but all signs point to "yes".

Yes, thing is, if you suffer abuse on an IM program you can easily block and report specific accounts.

You've been asking a bunch of "how to trace" questions and it reeks of wannabe script-kiddie.

Yes, it is possible, no I won't be telling you how.

CdK: I'd just lie and say "no, there is no way to detect IP addresses". Mr. Green After all, if they're dumb enough to ask...

Why? What's the problem? If you're being harrassed or threatened, just report the details, including time or times of events and messaging client used, and the screen name of the individual bothering you to your ISP and to the local authorities. They probably won't do anything, but then, that's the way it goes. You can always block a particular sender, if you want to, as well ... likely, that's your best approach. In fact, set your IM client to allow messages only from folks on your approved list, and include just folks you trust in that list. You can do pretty much the same for your email. C'mon, dude ... this is just the internet, its not real life.
