@Sturgis,
A hard pass for me too. I see them made in booths in your average trash fire... I mean ... NYC street fair.

I eat Oreos maybe once a year. I usually buy the original. I used to buy Hydrox out of spite, but I haven't seen those in years.

@edgarblythe,
Every few months, I'd buy Trader Joe's Joe-joes (aka their version of Oreos). This month, they have the October specialties - pumpkin spiced. I'm on my second box already since they came out a couple of weeks ago.

Whole Foods also has its fair share of seasonal versions as well. The peppermint ones for Christmas being the best.

Just the name of Hydrox reeks of fake processed crap. Why the heck would the choose such a name that sounds like chemicals.

FYI: Hydrox was created in 1908 and predates Oreo.

@tsarstepan,
It has nothing to do with that - it just hit me that is a horrible sounding name - just gives me an imagine of anything chemical and anything far from natural.

Nothing to do with oreos or even that hydrox cookie itself - the name just gives me the imagine of everything I would NOT want to put in my body.

Probably one of the major reasons why Hydrox was always outsold by Oreos and is no longer made or exists as a product anymore.

@tsarstepan,
My guess is when it was first made - those "chemical" sounding names were probably thought of differently - like hey this new crap - new innovation! Like Tang - all that new stuff was thought of being better ---

Now we realize it is actually crap and not good for our bodies. So why we see like one can of tang mix on the very bottom shelf hidden away (I have bought tang to help clean my dishwasher so it has use).

@Linkat,
Tango is a very popular soft drink brand over here.

Fizzy fruit drinks, similar to Fanta.

As far as Oreos themselves go I can't be bothered. I find them too expensive for what they are.

My younger son loves them, all of them, so I end up buying lots of them anyway.

Although I've never come across hydrox flavour.

@izzythepush,
I don't eat cookies but when the kids come to the door, I just give them some money for their project or whatever it is. I buy the original ones for my husband, though. I didn't know there was such a variety.

@Mame,
We don't have kids selling things door to door here.

It's not how our schools and youth organisations work.

Raffle tickets are the main source of funding.

Organisations send them out to members, as you have to send back the counterfoil and money to be entered it doesn't matter if you sell them or not.

It's not the same as having a product that would have to be returned if unsold.

they don’t taste the same, which was kind of a surprise. The Oreo cookie is a little more bitter than the Hydrox. What’s more, it tastes less like chocolate (to us that is) than the Hydrox cookie. This though, may be a very personal perception, as we discussed before when discussing why an Oreo cookie is black as well as when discussing the types of cocoa powders. If you’re used to a different type of chocolate or cocoa powder, you might find an Oreo taste more like chocolate instead of the Hydrox!

Apart from the cookie flavor, the filling of a Hydrox cookie is slightly different. The filling seems somewhat sweeter, but the overall balance for me is better in a Hydrox than in an Oreo cookie, it’s less sweet overall. Also, the crunchiness of a Hydrox is somewhat better than that of an Oreo. Even though differences are small, they clearly taste very different in a blind test. When reading the ingredient list of the two cookies it might seem that the Hydrox cookie contains more sugar, since it’s first ingredient is sugar. However, an Oreo contains both sugar and corn syrup, which is why the overall sugar content (as you can find in the nutritional information on the labels) is higher (14g in an Oreo vs. 12g). The ingredient list apart from this is actually very very similar. They contain almost identical ingredients in almost the same order. Which makes sense, since they look and taste very similar, the difference is nuanced.

@izzythepush,
Teams have bottle drives several times a year here and all sorts of kids are knocking on our doors. I don't mind contributing for a good cause. But those cookies taste like cardboard to me. I don't like much processed food at all, actually.

Tango is different than Tang - Tang is "what astronauts drink"

@Mame,
Agreed I don't eat either - on the rare occasion I have a cookie - it would be fresh made or from a bakery -- not worth the bad parts (sugar, calories, etc) - if I eat something that is less healthy it should be worth it - ie taste incredibly good!

When I was younger though you could sell me on the double stuff oreos - I would a kid take two - open them up so that the filling stays on onside - smoosh the two filling sides together and make a quad stuffed oreo - oh and eat the empties first -- then slowly eat around the edges so I will only have the cookie with filling stuffed to the ends and then eat them up.

I was odd even as a child.

@Linkat,
That doesn't sound odd - probably perfectly normal! I just never cared for sweets; therefore, my kids never got desserts. My daughter had a wagon wheel (ugh) in her lunch every day for several years. She likes sweets and so do her daughters. I prefer savoury foods (think anything ethnic, especially Asian) and find North American boring, for the most part. When she behaved well for a whole week (homework, room, and attitude), we'd go out for dinner. She often chose a Greek restaurant who had a male belly dancer, lol. Zen was his name. But both my kids love all types of foreign foods. I couldn't imagine eating only NA food - booooooring!
