LOL, I love Zone Alarm but it can lull you into a false sense of security. It's exceedingly rare that anyone will try to hack your computer, you have to engage in certain activity to get attacked (in my case I was hacked a few times because I ran a private ISP, and participate in anti hacking sites and this is taken as a challenge to hackers). And despite Zone Alarm being one of the best firewalls out there it isn't too secure (I was hacked with Zone Alarm running once, that prompted me to do my own tests on a private network and I was able to replicate the attack and bypass Zone Alarm on my second try).
Still, ZA is free and as good as firewalls get. But don't think it makes you secure. ;-)
Note: XP users should not use ZA, XP has a built in firewall and ZA does very poorly with XP.
Thanks for the tip, I'll consider that when I buy new 'puter... Don't like the idea of XP anyway, or should I say, I don't like it when Mr. Gates and his corporation gets a note of everywhere I surf around!
Take care, and good night, wherever y'all are!
XP's doesn't have any internet privacy concerns regarding surfing that the other versions didn't have. XP is also the best windows ever made (except for the fact that a great deal of hardware is incompatible with it).
How close, little k? The astroid, I mean. Should I add that to my worry list?
i wouldn't worry Roger, only a few miles away, not that close you know.
Thanks, mikey. Thanks a lot.
My pleasure Roger. Sleep well OK?
Asteroid? Dammit - I dreamed an asteroid hit the other night - (well, it did not hit the other night, which is an abstract sort of thing, it hit near where I live - but I digress..... as one does....) and now 'k tells me there IS an asteroid!
WHERE?
Just lost my post which is all the spookier since I was about to tell you about our office landlord (who is also a client of ours) whose internet access system was shut down recently by the Library of Congress because it had 'holes' in it which would allow hackers to use it to flood the internet with e-mails designed to slow it down, or even shut it down. Apparently these hackers work out of South America, mostly (Craven, are you listening?) but they suspect they have ties connecting them to groups elsewhere.
Anyway, my landlords ISP is the same cable company as I have which is kind of scary. And it's also kind of scary to know that the Library of Congress has people who spend their time on computers searching for such 'holes' and finding them where no one would ever expect the Library of Congress to be looking.
Landlord is now up and running again, but had to plug the 'holes' with the help of the ISP and his IT guy (likened it to putting an 'x' in the proper boxes). But in view of the craziness last night, makes you wonder what really is going on around here.
bandylu2- What do you mean by, I lost my post"?
I clicked on submit and I got an error message so I tried to refresh and nothing happened and I tried the 'back' arrow and wound up at the beginning of this post without my new post being added (and, of course, I'd neglected to copy it). So I redid it and this time (probably because I did copy it) it went through okay.
bandylu2- If you get an error message, would you please copy and paste the message, and send it to me by PM. I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
Sure, Phoenix. I've gotten the message on occasion when I click to enter a particular post and then I use the back arrow and go back and reclick and that usually works. This is the first time I've gotten it when I hit 'submit' though. It's a standard error message (I think -- I rarely read them, just hit back).
