What's Going On Tonight????

I was in my A2K mailbox, trying to delete some sent messages and all of a sudden the login box popped up and I had to log back in to A2K (which now tells me there are no posts since my last visit). And it's not just here -- hotmail is messed up, too. Gremlins on the internet? Sunspots?

Aaaand, I found out that we have an asteroid in the neighborhood that will be getting real close to home. But, that shouldn't effect the internet.

You know, I really have no idea how the internet works. Not even a clue. So you could tell me the asteroid did it and I'd probably believe you. Or the Republicans. Just don't tell me it's the terrorists. I'm tired of hearing about them.

I dunno 'bout you fellas, but my firewall's been registering WAY too many hits the last coupla days, Im talking 500 blocks in 5 hours, sometimes less hours! For the last 45 minutes it's been almost 70 blocks !

Check your 'puters security before someone else does!

We've just had rain all day. Temperature is warmer now than it was this afternoon. But I saw on the weather that MA was covered in pink (i.e. ice) though I called my daughter to make sure she got home safely (she goes to UMass in Amherst) and she told me it hadn't even rained there (that was around 7 p.m.).

How does one check the number of blocks by a firewall?

Do you have a firewall running? For instance ZoneAlarm, there are probably other brands as well, but this is the one I know. And it's always up and running down in my righthand corner, right next to my Norton Antivirus, making sure that noone has access to my little 'puter!

Here is a free firewall http://download.com.com/3000-2092-10153453.html?tag=lst-0-1
and this is the homepage of the maker of ZoneAlarm http://www.zonelabs.com/ You'll get the same product over both links!

They'll ask you a couple of questions to make sure that you've got the best security for your desktop. If you want the Top of the line product it'll cost ya $49.95, but that isn't necessary if you have a normal antivirus-program running! Go for the free version if your desktop is for your pleasure, and not for your job.

and, don't forget... check your computers security before somebody else does!

bigdice -- I've got zone alarm. I just didn't know how to check how many hits it has gotten. But I just looked and it was at 500 (the max) so I deleted and it's started over and is at 15 already (in about 10 minutes). Then I looked at the log and it's HUGE. Do I need to delete the log, too?

Yes you should delete the logs (unless you are using a version with a max size for the logs).

Note that 99.99999999999999999999999999999% of what's in those logs is irrelevant and it's certainly not anyone trying to access your computer (in 99+% of the cases). Zone Alarm logs very insignificant activity to help make it loook like it's doing something.

No wonder I was felling safe all the time! Really, no irony, whatsoever!

I asked my nephew once( one o' those cracks, like Craven!) and he said something similar to what you explained, not so straightforward, though! Maybe he thinks I'm way over the hill, since I'm at least 11yrs older than he is! (my sister-in-law started early!)
