how does lightning take place between clouds?

As a release of electrons---clouds are insulated from each other by the distance between each other and the dielectric property of the atmosphere. Consequently, not all clouds will have the same charge.
When a highly charged cloud gets near a cloud that is not so charged a transfer of electrons can take place to equalize the charge.
