@ehBeth,
Especially Garrett's!!!

I remember the day I discovered Garrett's popcorn. I was walking up Michigan Ave towards the river and saw folks lined up for blocks. I couldn't imagine what was at the end of the line. I was shocked to see people in line for popcorn. As I made my way closer to Union Station I saw another Garrett's store at Jackson and State St. The line was MUCH shorter so I decided to give it a try. YUM!!!!! I ate it on the train ride home. Later trips resulted in larger bags purchased which meant my family actually got to have some.

@George,
Chicago style hot dogs are better in Chicago than elsewhere as well.

you are not going to use this trip as an excuse for losing are you?

it's very possible the winner of batting average this week is still under mendoza...

@George,
get a bag and then go back and get a giant can of it!

Garrett's popcorn is the only vendor swag I'm glad to see.

@farmerman,
My favorite is sfinchiuni (one particular sicilian pizza).

When I lived in the Chicago area, in our neighborhood pizza wasn't a word.

I assume that getting up to the "Sears" Tower skydeck on a summer
weekend is just about impossible. We spent an eternity in line for
the Empire State a summer or two ago -- not an experience I'd care
to repeat.

That area where you stand on a glass floor looks cool, though . . .

@George,
Walking the river is good. I was probably the only person there. Probably not, but very few.

@ossobuco,
Did you see Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park?
It sounds spectacular.

@George,
Yes... but fountains are in my background. (Like, good, it is working)
I walked the city for a bunch of days. I was interested in places of my childhood, Palmer House, the Drake, Marshall Field's. Carson Pirie Scott (sp?), Michigan Avenue.

My father worked at Foote Cone and Belding on, I think, Superior. I looked at that address for a minute or two.

Interesting years.

@George,
I prefer the John Hancock bldg over the Sears Tower. No lines, closer to the lake, much cheaper. Or, if you take the elevator to the 95th floor and stay for a drink in the lounge (climb one flight to the 96th) then the elevator up is free. The view is fantastic! http://www.signatureroom.com/

If you want to skip the lounge you can purchase a ticket to the top on America's fastest elevator for $15

Remind me never to go to a hot dog stand in Chicago with you.

@George,
Sounds like you had a successful trip, at least on the fun portion. Sorry I wasn't there to join you. Next time!

Any favorites?

I'm going to be in Chicago and I want to have authentic Chicago-Style pizza.
Someplace near the University Center on South State St. would be best for
me. Any suggestions, Chicagoans?

Also, what's a good local brew I could wash it down with?

There are different kinds of Chicago style pizza. Do you mean deep-dish?

Hard to say. Grant Park is great place to jog. I actually jogged a little,
walked a little to take it all in. Also because it was HOT. Speaking of
which, slowing down to walk through the cool mist blowing of the
fountain was sooooooo refreshing.

I wasn't expecting the view of the city from the river to be so good. The
details of the stonework along the banks is outstanding.

Yep. It took me two tries, but I finally had some.

On the first try, every place (well, Giordano's and Lou Malnati's) had at least
an hour wait. On the second try, we went earlier in the evening.
