Song about prejudice

You've got to be taught to hate and fear,
You've got to be taught from year to year,
It's got to be drummed in your dear little ear…

You've got to be taught to be afraid

of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade…

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

The year, 1949. The lyricist, Oscar Hammerstein II. The show, South Pacific.

@Rickoshay75,
Yes, that is one of the best-known songs from South Pacific. Did you have a question or comment on it? Or are you just sharing?

Only that prejudice does a disservice to all minorities, even women, then and now.

@Rickoshay75,
Reason I like the song is because of the clear implication that racist prejudice is not, somehow, "natural." No, you've got to be carefully taught.

@Rickoshay75,
If you're talking about humans you're right, there is less genetic variation in the entire human race than in a typical group of 40 African monkeys of the same species.

If you're talking about hominids or "pre humans" or anything like that, the reasons for prejudice were pretty far from being irrational:

I don't think rational nor irrational has anything to do with prejudice. It's an emotional thing.

@Rickoshay75,
A prejudice against something that hunts you for food is totally rational...

Fear, yes, but not prejudice, hate rarely leads to action.
