A traveler wishes to stay at an inn for several days. He has no money, but he has a gold chain (like these o's joined together OOOOOOOO). The innkeeper agrees to let him stay on the condition that each day he pay one link of his chain. The traveler must pay every day; that is, at the end of one day, the innkeeper must have one link, at the end of two days, two links, at the end of three days, three links, and so forth. The traveler must cut his chain in order to make these payments. If the chain has seven links and the traveler stays for seven days, show how by cutting only one link he can pay for his lodging every day.
He doesn't have to cut it if he stays seven days
This one has been posted here before.
It's quite easy if you think about it.
Can those of you who know at least help me out a little bit? PLEASE!!!
I can think of a way to do it with one cut, but not cutting only one link.
It doesn't only have to be one link.....just one cut.
You only need to cut one link.
You need to find a combination of numbers that will add to make any number between one and seven.
As Frank and I said, not real hard.
I still don't get it....I'm pretty slow tonight...
I would just place them so that each is stacked on top of another and make one cut down the side of every single one.
That seems to be the easy way out though...
Do you want a harder answer?
First you find a chian saw...
If you want to give up that easily then the answer can be found
here.
chain link
was the chain linked together?? In the "picture" it shows them not linked together... 0000000 are not truley linked together!!!
How about this: you fold the chain of 7 links
so that with one cut you sever links 1 and 4 ( 0 00 0 000 )
that way you would have link 1 free (first night)
second night you would give the landlord links 2 and 3 and get link one back in "change"
third night you would pay with link 1
fourth night you pay with link 4
fifth night you pay with links 5 6 7 and get links 1 and 4 back in change
sixth night you pay with link 1
seventh night you pay with link 4
I THINK that works doesnt it?
It does work Kev but the question doesn't say one cut, it says cut one link.
cut the third ring, that will leave you with two peices of chain, one two links attached, and one four links. The first day give him the third link, the second day TRADE for the two attached together, the third day give him the third link again, the fourth day trade for the four links... and so on. I agree, it was easy.
