benefits from sub-domains

I am trying to help a friend with their website. One of the difficulties is that they offer about 4 or 5 services that are separate from each other. I was thinking about splitting it somehow, because I see this as diluting the content the a spyder and a visitor would see, but then I thought about sub-domains. Would it be a good or bad idea to put the actual pages of the services on a sub-domain with the service specific word as the name of the sub-domain?

I remember someone saying that sub-domains could work for you in that sense with engines, any ideas here?

Most search engines work on a per-page basis. So "dillution" is only really a concern for text on one page.

Using the word in the subdomain will help SEO.
