this is a riddle that i came upon through an aquaintance and i'm completely stumped so i decided to post it up here in hopes that someone may be able to shed some light on it:

Restrained to"good" when kept apart,
but put 'em together and you're making art.
Good turns to great with the flash of a knife,
a date each day and a friend for life.
An amalgam composed of elements three,
it ends with an "H" but starts with a "P."

WHAT AM I?

WHAT AM I?

My first feeling is that the answer may be "Photograph"

Restrained to good when kept apart, is vague but photo + graph

put em together you're making art = photographs are art

a friend for life-- a photo of a special person can be a friend for life

an amalgam composed of elements three, The chemical symbols for Phosphorus =P platinum= Pt, polonium Po, (elements) all of which are contained within the word.

Which ends with an "H" but starts with a "P"

PHOTOGRAPH?

a wild guess:

PARAGRAPH

the 'art' of literature is combining paragraphs, and improved to greatness by editing (cutting with a knife?). Reading literature is a date one should make each day, and reading can be called a friend for life. There are three syllables in par-a-graph.

"good turns to great with the flash of a knife" I would say that kev has the right idea, but I can't fit that particular sentence into the riddle

Hmmm, Letty, Equus suggested the knife for "editing" I like that, it could also be used for "editing film" so now I like it even more.

hmmm. Editing film then splicing, but I can't think of an edited film that would begin in "P" and end in "H"....

Well, I did find out one thing, runner. A camel's hair paintbrush has nothing to do with a dromedary; it was named after a Mr. Camel. Shocked
