It's also a matter of wear and tear. Like any mechanical device, it can be broken by using it to much. Defragging, at the very least, lets the disk drive work more efficiently.

I always have, and always will, defrag my hard drive. Sometimes I go a couple of months between defrags, and sometimes a bit sooner.

Hello Turner, I'm like yourself, but my XP has never said yet that I need to defrag no matter how long I leave it, and that is usually a number of weeks. About 5 minutes defrags mine and that is with 10-12 hours use per day. Computer about 19 months old. Smile
Using own defragger.

When your HD needs to be defragmented has nothing to do with how long you leave it running! Defragging isn't necessary unless you're adding, deleting & moving large amounts of data on your HD. True, the system performance benefits gained from defragging have been lessened by super-fast HD's and NTFS partitions but there are other benefits...which are mentioned in the article you linked too.

smokingunne- I have an XP that is a few weeks old. When I went to defrag it, I got a notice that I didn't need to.

Thank you so much for the link to the article. It is now in my "favorites". I also made a hard copy of it, and will go through the different suggestions. Super!

Monger sorry if you misunderstood my post. I didn't mean leave it running
idle, I wouldn't do that. I meant actual usage and that includes installing and uninstalling and the other work you mention..

They must have broken the link, I re-checked it after posting this morning
and all was well. It was openly posted when I picked it up.
As can be seen others have used the link. Sad

It doesn't really hurt anything to defrag, so why not just do it weekly? What's to loose? It gets you into the habit of taking good care of your computer.

Smile You might be right, Deb. Practically unused cerebra do tend to fetch the best prices.

Er - lose the bit about the platypus eggs, right?

Monger - the brain is the most attractive organ in the body - and yours is exercised well, I believe....

Perhaps you could buy it a nice blue cerebra ring, though?
