I hear you, eoe. I haven't gotten my bill for December yet but the one for November was bad enough ($344). I'm not looking forward to the new one Evil or Very Mad We keep the house at 68 degress during the day and 58 at night with lots of blankets on the beds. Because I'm the only one here during the day I let it get down to 62 between 11:00 and 3:00 and then hope for sunbeams to help heat up my office. We haven't had many sunbeams lately either.

I'm in one of those big apartment complexes, and the management company sends us a utilities bill instead of each respective company. So I'm never sure how the company measures what we use, whether they just divide the whole complex's use into the number of units - in which case I feel like my attempts to save energy is often thwarted by other people's wasteful habits... In any case, the point is, utilities bills do hurt. But nothing hurts more than the cable and phone bills...

True - I think it's more like $250... Anything other than bills make your teeth grind today?

Sorry to hear about the situation w/your ol' man, eoe. Kinda boring but today's been good to me so nothing teeth grinding worthy to share. Although I'm always crankier during commuting hours...taking the subway or driving, people just don't think straight sometimes.

It's highway robbery, that's what it is. Thanks Mr. Bush.

And another thing...the cost of a stamp went up today. From 37 to 39 cents. How many did you get stuck with? I have close to twenty 37 cent stamps. grrr.....

This makes me wonder how poor people cope with heating costs, eoe. This is probably a stupid question, but do they get any sort of concession based on their low salary? (We do here (where I live, anyway) in winter & it wouldn't be anything like as cold as many parts of the US)

They have a system here that will allow people to spread out their gas and electric bills over the course of a year. You pay one rate every month, regardless of how much of the utility you use. It works, I suppose, for people who must budget to the max but it still feels like a rip-off, paying whether you use the gas or the electricity or not. It still isn't just.

No, it doesn't sound just at all. Here (Victoria, Oz) the unemployed, low income folk like pensioners, retirees, etc, can apply for concession rates during the winter months when the cost of services like heating become much more expensive. It's a sizeable cut. All the same, costs have risen incredibly since the corporatization of basics like gas, fuel & water. Evil or Very Mad Governments used to own & run these services.

The price of gas has more than doubled since august. Even for my apartment, the cost is very high. We do have programs which help the needy with their heating costs, but funding for those programs have been dramatically cut.

Doubled! Shocked In such a short time? Confused Good grief, you wouldn't want to be poor!
The concessions here are paid for by the (state) government, through taxes.

the price always goes up as the demand does.... but I checked last year's bills, they didn't double.

yes, and our tax pools have been diminished by other things, like tax cuts for wealthy people.

Yes, indeed, k .... & here's a hope that no one is freezing cold in their home right now, because they can't afford to be warm. Sad
