That's interesting, k.

I mean is the whole family split on either supporting you or your sister? One side or another? Is that the main/sole issue?

The family usually tries hard to not take sides. This round is a little different. My sister's anger was largely directed at me, the rest of the family came to my defense. But, they also went to pains to explain to my sister that she had a right to be upset. Just not with me alone or to the extent to which she got upset. Basically, the problem was the result of a multi-lateral failiure to communicate.

I'm pooped. Thanks for talking with me MsO. I'll be back tomorrow (later today!).

no it isn't. i read the law at the airport - francis posted a link. weather conditions exempt companies from having to compensate clients or put them up anywhere. it's just nice of lufthansa that they did it for sublime, but they don't have to, according to the law.

Well, others did (and not only Lufthansa!).
The law DID apply since there WERE departures and arrivals at Schipohl (at least, four hours before your take off [actually, it was much earlier.]

But airlines are unlikely to offer compensation to those who don't ask for it.

no, there weren't any departures available for me from schiphol anymore. i missed my connection due to bad weather - my flight from vienna was late - and nothing was available until next day at the same time. reading the EU law it seems like it fully covers the KLM. Dunno. I'm not gonna hassle anybody about it now.... Or should I? I don't think I have a chance.

I got stuck at the Portland, Oregon, airport for many many hours after my connecting plane was taken off the schedule. True, that was not a weather situation. I was irate at how they handled things for those among us who were plane-less and were then assigned new flights. Talk about chaos. I was late by a day for a family memorial gathering. Wrote the airline in high dudgeon...

got a free flight.

Might not hurt to try a letter.

guess so. after all, i got nothing but a handshake. and then, the next day - i was THE LAST ONE to get the seat on the plane. sure i raised a stink then - i asked menacingly weather they are serious about letting a customer wait for 24 hours, pay her own hotel and then shove her in the worst seat possible...and got an aisle seat in the end.... but that's no way to treat customers.... guess if i wrote a complaint i'd get at least something. will do that, won't hurt. thanks for prodding, i need that.

dag : make sure you send a detailed letter/email of compaint. list all the facts (but avoid nastyness) and ask for a specific remedy - money, free flight ...
ask for a reply by a certain date, let's say two weeks.
if no reply, ratched up the pressure and copy higher-up; again give deadline.
if no reply, copy the offce of the president.
if still no results contact the ombudsman at "conde nast travel" www.cntraveler.com , suggest you buy/borrow from library a copy of cn to get an idea how they handle complaints. they seem to be good at getting results.
good luck ! hbg

Oh!

Tell me about it!

It's colder'n a witch's mammary glands right outside my door (and none too warm inside, either).

And I don't get to fly home from this, either. Hmph. (I grew up in Minnesota, there is no good reason for me to be such a wimp about it. Except that it was 70 a week ago, maybe. To me, it should get cold and STAY cold if it's gonna, none of this pogoing around and messing with the acclimation process.)
