If the law was changed so that the government paid all costs, would there still be such strong objection to it and a constitutional challenge?

as an outsider i'm saying yes, it smacks to much of socialism for most americans, the US seems to fear the "ism's"

You really really really don't understand the conservative objections to Obamacare don't you??

Republicans (AKA political naives, corporate lackies/accomplices, and assorted goofballs) don't want government to pay for anything. If government paid for all costs, their objections would increase a thousand fold rather then disappear.

You may be right.

Presently, the government pays for many programs that are of dubious value. There is little objection to that.

I'm not sure you are right, if you are speaking of all conservatives. Might make a difference in how it was written, and what you mean by "all costs".
