Is it essential that a new website have a .com name for the highest probability of success, or can it be just as successful as a .net, .info or some other domain?

Yes, it certainly can. But a .com top level domain is best.

For sites that get a lot of search traffic it's less important. But for the surpose of stickiness it is.

So it depends on the site, and how it plans to spread the word. If any promotion is done off of the net (radio, print, TV) then a .com is more important.
