Throw back to instinct. They are trampeling down the grass before laying down.

@Frank Richards,
That, being what Punkey said and that it's a safety thing for them, when they sleep they curl up, so going around in a circular fashion comforts them and allows them to sleep in the same fashion, curled up. They are tired.

Although my 16 and a quarter pomeranian can't stop walking in a circle until, she falls, asleep which drives me nuts but that's why she's doing it....

Always better to lie down when you feel dizzy... That is how it works for me... If you can't live on the straight and narrow, try the horizontal...

My main dog always makes his bed before getting into it... He has a blanket and pillows in the bin he sleeps in, and he tries to get his nose in, and then jump between two layers so he is covered by the same blanket he is sleeping on... If the blanket gets on the floor he can get so tangled up in it he cannot get loose to go bark when people come to the door, or respond when dinner is served...The blanket will be rolling and he will be walking on it trying to get it off of him... What a sight...Champ always has had an eye out for the soft spot..
