I am brand new in college and I do not have the ability to think scientifically and we have been given an assignment to write up a formal hypothesis on pepto bismol and its ability to treat heartburn. I know I have to break down the independent and the dependent variables. I dont know which is which.

@tonisinnh,
The independent variable is the item you manipulate (e.g. dosage quantity, frequency etc)
The dependent variable is the effect you measure (e.g patient reports, physiological indicators).
You will also need to consider control parameters such as placebo administration perhaps by double blind method.

@fresco,
In addition to the help Fresco gave you, here's info on the Pepto-Bismol product.
