how to protect grandchildren from drug addict mom?

my daughter is a drug addict. she also has two young children and lives with me. she went to rehab and was going to the outpatient classes at the local recovery center but lately has been very difficult about going to class, meetings, etc.

today i found her in the bathroom and she had taken 5 vicodin. i brought her to the hospital to detox and wanted to report her to the police, but i want to make sure that the kids won't be taken by CPS. i really don't want them to be taken to a foster home and put in the system.

the problem is a few months ago my husband was disciplining one of the boys - threw him on the bed and he bumped his head on the headboard. my daughter told her counselor at the recovery center and they reported him to CPS.

i don't know if i report my daughter if they will take the boys from our home completely because of the report on my husband. i feel helpless. any advice would be appreciated.

@worriedgrandma,
Hello friends,

I am not sure how things work in your state, but if you call child protective services that does not mean you will never get them back or you can't formally adopt them.

I strongly recommend that you take some kind of act so that you can get some formal custody of them, and going through child protective services to report their mother may be the way to do it. But I can't give out legal advice, but you should seek the advice of a lawyer to see your options.

Best regards
Marie Tyler

@worriedgrandma,
Talk to someone at legal aid, then call CPS, yes them, tell them what is going on, tell them you want to do what is right, and see if they can't give you some advice and help. Can't hurt, and there are some good, albeit very overworked, people there.
