Color setting in active desk top? How do I change?

I had trouble with Windows ME and after un-installing and re-installing my color settings in "Active Desktop" only shows two choices:
2 or 16.
No other choices are shown as available.
Similarly the " Screen Area" is set at '640 X 480' and wont' allow any adjustment.(can't ckick and move it)
Suggestions?

You probably need to update your drivers.

The display options are usually limited by hardware and drivers.
