Another Computer Question... :)

This question may seem strange, but I have a strange idea...

Will internal computer components/hardware (specifcally a cdrom) work outside the case? - Provided the power and ribbon cables are long enough, of course. Thanks again!

You don't even really need a case. The case just keeps it all together in a bundled up package and keeps components from getting damaged. The only thing in my computer that's still in the case is the motherboard and power supply. Everything else is strung out all over my bench. It works though. And I don't reccommend doing this to your computer. Surprised

Yeah, and from a standpoint of keeping components cool, it might work very well. But I am wondering about dust. Wouldn't the exposure to dust, damage the components eventually?

Could you post a picture of your rig? I would love to see that!

Gus- That piece in the middle....reminds me of something that I had on one of my old short-wave radios. Ah, memories!

Yes & No. You'll still need fans pointed towards your PC if you run it outside a case, as proper airflow is more important than ventilation. E.g., some people leave the covers for open PCI slots off, hoping for better ventilation, but that often makes the CPU run several degrees hotter. You want one entry point for cool air, and one exit point for warm air. Proper airflow design works, and that's one factor that makes some PC cases more expensive than others.

Too much dust can cause problems, but fans suck tons of dust into computer cases anyway. If all your components are outside a case you're much more likely to notice dust buildup & not let it go on for years. But then yeah of course there'd be a greater chance of damage or of getting liquids and bits of crap inside.
