What's interesting with this thread is the fact that while there have been at least 15 respondants who I would argue are "liberal," there is very little discussion of giving away one's lottery winnings.

What's even more interesting is that you lump 'giving away money' with the 'evil liberals'. Agreed, being generous and sacrificial doesn't really jive with the Conservative dogma.

@Questioner,
Over here we pay our taxes on the stake, not the winnings. It used to be that you were given the choice at the betting shop, (though not with lottery tickets) most people chose to pay on the stake.

Regarding paying taxes versus charitable giving, JB Priestley covered the matter very well. Perhaps the cruelest person in the play was the head of the charity. If people pay enough taxes, we don't need charity. That's basically the Socialist argument, you either agree or disagree with it.

Om Sig Dave definitely agrees with the argument, as if sure he'll concur.

@izzythepush,
See, that's the kicker with the GOP over here in the states. They blast the Dems for giving out 'handouts' to people, and they blast the Dems for wanting to raise taxes to generate new revenue.

If the Oil companies and DOD contractors aren't rolling in money, the GOP isn't happy. (See recent Boehner's rejection of a Sentate-passed bipartisan payroll tax cut extension because it didn't allow for the keystone pipeline project.)

So not only do they not want us to raise taxes, unless we pay the oil companies that have them in their pocket, they won't even allow us to extend the cuts on taxes. It's frustrating to say the least.

@Questioner,
Well our Tories have very rich donors in the City Of London. That's the reason they put the kibosh on a recent deal about the euro, although our Euro-sceptic presss tried to portray it as something else. So I get where you're coming from.

@msolga,
And "right away" I would set aside 50% of my winnings to give away.

Hey, you got caught up in the lust for money. Nothing particularly wrong with that.

@Ceili,
Yeah right, because it's a given that you would give away 50% or more of your winnings.

You needn't feel bad or protest. We all love money.

I agree with Robert Heinlein 's choice to keep government weak, starved & inoffensive.
I am not an anarchist, but close to it.
I like to select a hedonic target
and then kinda pounce, unexpectedly dumping the cash on her or him.

I did that most recently a few days ago in Florida
at the 1OOth Birthday Party of my friend, Donald's father.

Nice try, Finn.
But rubbish. Wink

As I recall, I was having a glass of wine to celebrate, after verifying the winnings weren't a hoax & hadn't even considered what to do with my new found booty.
Would you like me to do that for you now? Smile

I’m not sure what I would do. Probably set up college funds for under privileged kids. Having money only gives you choices but will never make you happy, kind of the way I look at it.

@jcboy,
U know, if u want,
u can adopt MY hobby:
as u walk thru the world, wherever u go
u might see someone upon whom your good will (meaning cash)
can rest CAUSING UNEXPECTED JOY to her or him, as u please
(but it does not always work; that depends on the state-of-mind of the recipient).

I would set my children and heirs up, then having fullfilled my obligations to take care of my family I would take a year to travel everywhere I always wanted to then commit suicide.

The auto-erotic asphyxiation in a Thai hotel closet is SO overdone.

Because I'll have done everything I want to do, I don't believe in Hell and I don't fear death but I do fear the unavailability of medical care as I become older and dying wasting away in pain shitting my pants and making a spectacle of myself although some will say I've made a career of making a spectacle of myself. I'm not maudlin or in a fey mood or anything. Laughing
