When I play games like Team Fortress 2, Modern Warfare 3, BF3, etc. the games run super smooth and then randomly the FPS drops down to 15-20. In TF2 and MW3 the game runs easily at 40+fps on high settings but randomly drops for a couple of seconds and then will go back to normal then drop again. its getting really frustrating.... any ideas why? and how can I fix this?
Specs:
-i7 2670QM (2.2 - 3.1ghz)
-8GB Ram
-Geforce GT 555M (1GB Vram)
-750GB HDD
-Win7 Home

Check power options.. there is probably an option to scale back the frequency to save power.
Alternatively, it may be a hard wired thing, in that the unit is overheating so it slows performance to cool. Run an extra fan, or open up the case and get cool air moving in there and see if that corrects the problem.

In addition to the existing suggestions, I'd like to add that it could be a background software process that runs occasionally.
