Take care dont you fall
Off the harbour wall
Not as if your six-feet tall
Sit down lad I will tell you a tale.

But now you see I'm getting old
There is a story to be told
I fought in two wars
In many strange places.

Didn't know these men
Sometimes we never seen their faces
Sometimes I wonder
If they thought the same as I.

Lets have a cup of coffee
And kiss the war goodbye
Now I just take my time
Not like those days in the front line.

The sounds of the cannons
deafening to the ear
Put the fear of death
They sound so near.

Was it worth it?
Its hard to say
It seems like a century away.
But sometimes it comes back just like Yesterday.

"Don't worry lets make our way home"
"Grandad your as cold as a stone"

joe1949,

This is a plaintive glance into a soldier's heart. Makes me sad and glad together. Sad for war, and grateful for homecoming.
