WTF Happened to My RITZ Crackers?

Reply Wed 16 Nov, 2011 06:50 pm
OK, so I have not gotten any for maybe two years....I buy some for this baked oyster dish that I do only to find out that they are basically bite sized now. WTH??!! This is by no means the only time they have shrunk either, there have been at least two others, but the end result is that they are now about half the size they were when I first had them during the 1970's.

Damned annoying this is. I grind them up for the oysters but lets say for the sake of argument that sometime I might want to put something on top of a Ritz....what am I supposed to do with this tiny cracker? Is this part of a new class of supermarket products...food for anorexics??

It was just a couple of months ago that I was noticing the same thing with Dorito's

http://able2know.org/topic/177571-1

This is seriously pissing me off, not only does it screw up recipe's but shrinking food and portions also increases packaging waste. We see here for the six thousandth time that capitalism now runs counter to the best interests of humans a lot of the time....we need to be moving towards less packaging waste not more...

@hawkeye10,
I have a recent purchase of them as being 1.625 inches in diameter. The problem I have is that there are 38 in a tube which I open and use a few of. The rest go back in the pantry. And I forget about them.
It is a terrible waste. I think Congress should investigate.

YEP...go buy a box and you will see. Back in the 70's you could get a pretty decent slice of cheese on a Ritz, but now all that will work is a cheese cube.

@hawkeye10,
I'll check it out. Ritz is the shitz!

My mom used to make mock-something (mebbe mock apple pie?) using crushed Ritz crackers.

I just found an article that addresses the subject of shrinking food. Hold on to your hat as they are claiming the lesser packaging gives the Green advantage..they should be shot:

I get 1.75 inch D and I am pretty sure that the last shrink before this was to 2 inches D so surface area has shrunk from 3.14 to 2.40 by my calculations. I was scouting the web but cant find what the old weights were, sad to say. I am thinking that long ago they were some where around 2.25 in D though.

How did you get the 1.625? If you have this right surface area goes all the way down to 2.07 for a loss of ever a third. THAT SUCKS!

@hawkeye10,
I did find out that a sleeve used to crush down to 1.5 cups, so it will be easy to see how much weight has been lost next time I make the oysters.

Another thing that I just noticed...they no longer stamp the cracker with "Ritz", not sure when that ended but lots of pics show stamped crackers and I remember them being that way.

@hawkeye10,
Do you understand how incredibly stupid your argument is?
The only reason this cracker exists is because of capitalism, you more than likely owe your very existence to capitalism. Capitalism has pulled BILLIONS of people out of poverty and improved living standards around the world.
The US feeds 1 Billion people around the world with our charity.
But you hate it because one company seems to have given you less chips in a bag.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say you live in a western, capitalist nation. Because in socialist nations like Venezuela people are starving.
Maybe you should move there.

They are crackers, and they have also made them so that they are now very fragile which makes loading them up harder to do. My complaints are that they are increasing the package to food ratio, changing the size messes up recipes, smaller crackers are harder to load, and they raising the price per weight of food a lot, and that they are doing all of this without transparency.
