Last I heard the worlds largest city by land coverage was Tokyo Japan and the worlds most populated city was Mexico City

For what it's worth the second largest in land terms is Mount Isa in Queensland, Australia. It's huge but empty of population. The populated area is actually quite smal.

This is often a question of definition. What is really a city? To most people it is a built up area. But it could also in some countries be just a type of local government.

In Sweden back in 1949 Kiruna in the very far north of the country was declared a "city" by the government.

When I was a child I always heard that it was the largest city in the world.

I 1971 a uniform type of municipality was introduced and all the former towns and cities in the country were formally abolished.

The municipality of Kiruna today has a area of 19,466 sq kms, but the town proper is just about 16 sq kms. The rest is mountains and lakes.

I think it is the same with Mount Isa, but it is even larger.

@gareth79uk,
It is my impression that, as you say, Tokyo is the largest city (urban center) . More people there partake of the urban situation (i.e., the facilities enjoyed by "city folk"). Mexico City is also one of the largest, contiguously populated centers, but many of its people do not participate in urban-type facilities (phones, sewage pickup, newspapers, sewage drainage, etc.); they often live in shanty towns--on the edge of "the city"-- much like the rural centers from where they migrated.
