there are 9 bags, each bag has 9 mother cats, each mother has 9 kittens, each kitten has 9 brothers and 9 sisters.......
how many cats in total?
@mania560,
Are you leaving out the St. Ives part?
@sozobe,
As I was going to St Ives
I met a man with seven wives
Each wife had seven sacks
Each sack had seven cats
Each cat had seven kits
Kits, cats, sacks, wives
How many were going to St Ives?

Can I answer? 81 cats total. You didn't ask how many kittens. You said "cats"
That means 9 bags each with 9 cats for a total of 81 cats. Kittens do not equal cats. Trick question.
@Krumple,
In that case, it's only 9 cats because each cat has 9 kittens with 9 brothers and sisters and we don't know the ages of the brothers and sisters. Are they the same age or much older?
@Mame,
The answer Mame, is 1. Only one person is going to St.Ives, the person telling the tale of how they met someone with 7 wives, etc.
