No advice Soz - I hope she's better soon and you all get some good rest. Take care of you too!

soz, there's almost no kind of ear problem mrs. hamburger, hamburger and I haven't experienced over the decades. Infections, scar tissue, wax build-up, swimmer's ear, allergy ear, hearing loss - we've enjoyed Confused it all. Vosol's sort of our baseline defense mechanism now.

My personal best was the year that I managed to get three different types of ear infection at the same time. 2 different ones in one ear, something else in the second ear. The g.p. and the specialist were most impressed. I also had an infection in my scalp from getting a hawthorn needle stuck in my head at the same time. I was a vision.

FreeDuck, I've definitely experienced the wax thing, remember it clearly -- how things sounded before and after. I know someone who adopted a deaf toddler from Russia -- purposely wanted to adopt a deaf child -- only to find after a couple of visits to the pediatrician that he just had wax build-up. When that was removed, he could hear fine. (A bit of a reverse crisis from the usual. "But I wanted a deaf child!" *sob*)

Which is to say, whatever happened to me is vanishingly rare -- when it was being thoroughly investigated I was one of 6 people or something that they knew of it happening to, ever -- and the wax situation is pretty common.

Well, that's comforting to know. I'm always concerned that my unwillingness to take him to the doctor will result in something going unnoticed that has permanent consequences. But, realistically, doctors don't do much noticing, in general, unless I push them to it. I'll just keep doing what I've been doing then.

Very glad the sozlet is feeling a little better. I wish I had more to offer than good wishes.

Oh my Beth, that is impressive! Yoiks.

It's one reason I stopped wearing hearing aids, had to be reeeeaaaally careful to avoid getting otitis externa (ear canal infection ) (just checked and that does seem to be what Vosol is for.) Not fun.

FreeDuck, don't I know it. I've had to be way proactive, in both directions. ("Do that!!!" "Don't do THAT!!") (Yes, doctors adore me. Heh.) Three visits to the dentist and a look by the pediatrician at a spot on the sozlet's tooth when she was about a year old yielded a whole lot of "it's fine"s and "you worry too much"s -- I didn't like the spot one bit and jumped through a zillion hoops (which was time consuming, I thought I saw another spot appear during that period) to get a consult with a pediatric dentist, who said yep, she has cavities. The original spot, the new one, and 5 more besides. (She had 'em all filled, no problems since.)

Didn't do a lot to inspire confidence in the medical profession for me. (Though the pediatric dentist was absolutely fantastic.)

Yikes, poor kid. And at only one year! Well, the nice thing is that they've made so many advances in dentistry that it doesn't have to be traumatic to have cavities filled anymore.

But yeah, in general it seems most doctors want to give a quick diagnosis and treatment (or none) while a few sent from heaven actually spend time on the diagnosis.

Oh, it was traumatic. Anesthetic, etc. That part was horrible, but what I really credit this office with is how they handled subsequent visits -- we've gone every six months since the fillings and she's not concerned in the least. Likes it even.

Soz.... this isn't the place, but here's a link to a radio show I listened to today on Talk of the Nation (npr). It was about deaf culture. The link usually goes to am audio link, but it says you can get a transaction for free (they usually charge for that service).

Thanks littlek! I can tell from the guests they mean business. Looking forward to reading it.

And thanks for healing thoughts, everyone. Doing WAY better than I had hoped! May possibly escape this without a full-blown ear infection -- if so, next step is to decide whether to send her back to school at all before next ENT appt. (a month away now.)

Several proper sozlet stories have come and gone, can't bring any to mind right now, so this one's minor... Hubby just moved into a new building at work, drew a picture of his new office for me to get ideas for where to put various pieces of furniture, etc. As he and I continued talking, sozlet started adding to the drawing he'd made. Put all of us in the "guest" chairs, made an elaborate toy box and then labeled it as such (after asking us how to spell it), then very solemnly asked E.G. who his favorite stuffed animal was. After some thought, he said "Beary" (her favorite, who she sleeps with every night), and she drew this awesome (and tiny -- maybe one inch total) portrait of Beary, little ears, little eyes, everything. So cute.

Oh that reminds me of one other thing, she loves the show "Trading Spaces" and wants to be on it. So she wrote them a letter (with help from me) with a drawing of this room and some of her ideas. Then WE were Trading Spaces -- she was Gen, I was Vern (our respective favorite designers) and rearranged things etc. She set up several little tableaus, a blanket on the ottoman with a groovy girl set just so against a doll-sized table with a --- what are they called? little jointed animals that move when you push on the bottom -- on the table.

Anyway.

Gonna see if I can catch ehBeth for a game of Scrabble.

Oh and at the end of playing Trading Spaces we switched to being the homeowners, and said "Oh my gosh this is SO beautiful!!!" and hugged each other and fanned our faces.

(This was all her idea.)

As we are phasing meat out of our diet.....

Hubby comes on and admits to having eaten meatballs at the school where he teaches and were the oldest onyxlet goes to school. She, being very...astute listens to him spin his tale of why he didn't eat what I made for him for lunch....in short, b/c the meatballs just looked tooooo good.

Onyxlet: Daddy, why didn't you just eat what mommy made?
Daddy: Because, the meatballs looked too good
Onyxlet:....hands on hips (what specks there are of hips anyway) and after a very long and exasperated sigh "Daddy, you did not have to eat them. followed by a few moments of silent thought, after which comes.....
MEAT EATER!!!!
in a very dignified, but firm (and just a tad above a 'normal' decibal for in-the-house speech) tone of voice.

Oh man can I picture that!! Laughing

So good to see ya! How's life?

A couple tiny things from a bit ago (one brought to mind by the above):

sozlet will often explain what she thinks should happen -- a game we should play, in what order we should clean up, whatever -- and then after she's made sure we're on the same page, she says, "OK, let's do it!" in this very peppy, camp counselor sort of way.

Second thing -- was typing while she's at her art table, and I just [like while writing the first line] got a totally awesome valentine's day card with a cut-out rose (from flower catalogue), cut out flower heart and "mama" on the front and "Dear Mama, Love [sozlet]" on the inside. :-D

I like this age.

She didn't get quite enough sleep last night, and today as we were driving to the zoo, which takes a while, she looked kind of bored and I thought it would be perfect if she'd take a short nap then. I explained to her that I always used to like to take naps in the car because it was like magic -- I'd fall asleep and then poof I'd be instantly there! Her eyes got huge and she said "oh, wow.....!" Then she immediately snuggled into a corner of the car seat, closed her eyes, and fell asleep! Shocked

It took some doing to wake her up once we got there, but when she did wake up, she stretched, looked around, sleepily smiled, and said "it worked!"

me too - I much preferred intelligent conversations and the constant enquiring and learning to having a small baby (much as I loved them as small babies).

A little time-travel -- just found some hastily-scrawled notes in a file I'm cleaning. Dated October 2002, so sozlet was almost 2 years old. I think almost all of the things she's saying (in quotes) she signed.

[sozlet] and I were hiding under the [burgundy] flannel sheet. I asked her why she liked hiding so much. "Does this remind you of when you were in Mama's tummy?", I asked. "Yes!" she said. I asked if she liked being in Mama's tummy. "Yes!" What was it like in Mama's tummy? "Hot!" then "Warm!" What color was it in Mama's tummy? "Red!" (!) What did you hear in Mama's tummy? "Ball." Ball? "Boom, boom, boom" (imitating dribbling/ bouncing a ball.) What did you do in Mama's tummy? (kicked sheet) (wiggle) + "hide!" (Also turning around -- wind the bobbin up motion). Were you sad to come out of Mama's tummy? "No... happy!" (pause, then "awake" or "wake up" or "open eyes" sign.) What did you see? "I saw Mama!" What did it taste like in Mama's tummy? "Yummy!" (At some point talking about coming out of Mama's tummy -- "hurt my head". Also "bear", which I didn't get.) What did it smell like in Mama's tummy? "Red."
