Soz,
Interesting discussions with both Sozlet and her doctor. As someone who is deaf in one year, with now hearing loss in the remaining good year, it is a topic that does touch me.
No one knows the precise cause of my deafness - at birth? Genetic or intrauterine? At about age one when I had a high fever with the measles? No one knows, as it wasn't discovered until I entered school and had the usual testing. Although, I had been saying for years, when I got punished for not doing something, or doing something that I should not have done, that I had not heard my parents tell me the relevant things. Sigh.
Follow up with the Sozlet. She has a great attitude about possibilities though.

I said well, it was when a president did some bad things to try to get re-elected. She nodded sagely and said, "Oh, like George Bush!"
Heh.

Too cute. For the first time, my genius nephew said he thinks he might want to be President, not too long ago. You're party looks like it has a glorious future!

"are you deaf?" She piped up with, "hmm, a little bit! <big grin>" (almost missed that one

)
Interesting, sumac. I was deaf in one ear for a long time too, 'til the other one went. The "deaf" ear is actually better than the other one these days.
The Turbo Frog/ Sozlet party, excellent! (I had his actual nickname first but wasn't sure if that was kosher, Turbo Frog is what E.G. used to do with him. He'd go into a crouch in preparation for a frog leap, E.G. would put his hands under his arms and then when TF jumped, E.G. would make it a turbo jump (over his head), and TF would laugh and laugh.) (Still can't quite get over that. _____ is your nephew!.)
One more, I don't know why this is on her mind lately, we haven't talked about Bush since the election in front of her I don't think, but today out of the blue she said to me, "You know what? George Bush won the election... in Mexico! And John Kerry won... here!!"
That last part was punctuated with a little nodding "strange but true" kind of expression.
Turbo Frog eh?

I don't know what is or isn't Kosher so I'll just follow your cue. TF he is! Sounds like the Sozlet is a little
too far left, with that denial thing...

Too damn cute. I love it when the little ones try to sell whoppers.
(Sounds like a powerful ticket!)
Then again, infuse 'em too much with your perceptions and they'll go all rebellious when they get 15, turning into Young Republicans and all that ... ;-)
Me, although handing out Labour Party balloons at the city market at age 6 (I insisted), I never did that later on ... but I sure made my father's life hard with endless debates about the 60s Left's guilt in excessive passivity / apologeticness vis-a-vis Soviet communism ... even tho the poor man had actually quit his radical student organisation when he found out it was covertly steered by the Trotskyites ...
But hey, nowadays we agree on most anything again ... ;-)

Phhhttttthhht!!
I know, nimh. I never really rebelled politically, well my parents probably think I'm more conservative than I should be (stop laughing Bill!), but I should probably introduce more subtlety into my political discourse with sozlet. I mean, she's FOUR, but obviously she thinks about this stuff.
(Mexico??)
New Mexico perhaps ... ;-)
Hey, there are still people who think you need a visa to enter New Mexico or who aren't really sure it is a part of the US! As a friend from New York commented,
Is that west of the Hudson River?"
Soz, I am always amazed at how much little ears pick up and how accurate it often is. The mistakes or misperceptions can be hilarious
I think she was trying to make me feel better -- she knew I really really really wanted Kerry to win. So she was offering me new information to cheer me up. :-) (Again though it hasn't come up for a couple of months so I don't know why NOW.) (Mebbe just Watergate --> Bush --> oh darn Bush won. Phooey.)

I can't imagine how liberal Grandma must be...
Hey, Soz is one of the moderates here, on the liberal side. Gotta admit that.
I LIKE your grandma, soz. And sozlet's observations about Mexico versus here. Occom Bill, good to see you!
Hiya sumac.
A coupla days ago, I was trying to remember when/ whether something happened. Sozlet was very emphatic (that word comes up a lot with her, doesn't it?) -- yes, it happened. I asked whether she was sure. She said "Yep!" then tapped her forehead and said with a grin, "I have a beautiful brain in there!"
She does indeed have a beautiful brain in there! What a comment from a child her age. Has she heard that phrase before?
Not that I know of. I comment approvingly on how smart she is often, but I don't remember ever saying that specifically.
Hola Sumac! Good to see you too!
Beautiful brains are good things to have (nods very reaffirming.)
It sounds like the sozlet does indeed have a beautiful brain in there.
Here's a little something I want to share with you. My daughter, who just turned three, has always called me Daddy. Nobody know why -- my son calls me Mom -- but she always has. Her father is Baba. Recently it has become very confusing in our house as she has learned that fathers are called Daddy. So now when she calls for Daddy and I answer she tells me in a frustrated way "you're not Daddy, Baba is Daddy!" It's habit, though, and I still answer to Daddy.
Sweet! :-D
More this 'n' thats:
Dunno where her hearing is exactly but she's definitely still got some loss (think it's better), so while she's always adding vocabulary especially happy to see new stuff now -- last night we were looking at the cover of a new library book and commenting on it and she furrowed her brow a bit and said, "I'm eager to see what it's about!" ("Eager" is the new word there in case it's not obvious...)
Also related to hearing, maybe, is that she makes sure there is always a drawing or page from a magazine taped above the main heating vent in this room. When she sees it fluttering, she exclaims "the furnace is on!" and runs over to stand on it. (It's been COLD!)
The other day she was watching TV and we were worried that she was too cold and so E.G. tried to put a sweatshirt on her. She protested angrily, saying "before you put that on I was [too/two] fine, now I'm THREE fine!! [glare]"
Not sure exactly what that meant, probably an ASL thing -- if you sign "fine" once, it means things are OK, twice is more emphatic -- just perfect, thanks -- and three times is a bit more "yes I'm fine leave me alone already!"
One thing I just love is when she first comes downstairs in the morning. I'm usually here or reading in the chair nearby, and she comes through the dining room and down two small steps into this room. So she's usually still very sleepy, her hair messy, wearing fuzzy footie pyjamas, and often loosely holding her teddy bear Beary. So sweet. I usually catch sight of her when she's in the living room, and then she just kind of floats from there to my lap, and snuggles in to cuddle for a while before waking up more fully. Nice way to start the day.
That's cute. She sounds very smart. My three-year-old used the word 'realize' the other day and it made me curious. Not sure if she knows what it means, but she used it correctly that once.
I also love the morning snuggles. It's one of the things I look forward to on the weekend. I don't know what it is about little girls when they just wake up with their hair piled on top of their head and their eyes as big as saucers. Delicious.
