These were not ordinary crabs, shewolf. They were the 8" black ones that burrowed in any available orifice and shot out their spiny appendages for a firm grip. Then they waited for your feeble attempts at extraction and, I swear to God, the little bastards were smiling.

Gus, go to the backboard and write, "I will not speak of crabs and other seafood that has a nasty reputation. Do this 100 times and think about your sin.

Soz, forgive him; remember, he is from a swamp.

OK, new story.

Our daughter "Ya-ya" (that's what she calls herself) is 13 months, just learning to talk.

Whenever someone sneezes or coughs, she'll make a little coughing sound to imitate them and then giggle. We've also taught her sign language. She has lots of signs, mostly surrounding things she's really interested in like toys, babies, food, drink, etc.

Today, we three were having lunch. My wife had chocolate-covered coffee beans as her dessert. Ya-ya apparently thought they were grapes as she pointed at them and signed "fruit" and then "eat." We explained that the beans were not for babies. Not to be deterred she signed "fruit" and then "eat" again. I told her that mommy was eating coffee beans and that babies don't like coffee.

She looked at me and said, "<cough>, <cough>."

So cool!!

(I am absolutely loving how many hearing parents are teaching their hearing babies ASL. Isn't it great to have access to her little brain, tho?)

She grinned after "cough cough", didn't she?

:-D

Evidently I laugh a lot while I'm on A2K.

I was doing some stuff, left A2K on the screen, came back in the room and sozlet was sitting on my chair, "reading" raptly, and giggling and shaking her head. I said, "what?" and looked, thinking it was a funny animation or avatar or something. Nope, just a regular screen, some avatars, lots of text, nothing too remarkable.

She smiled at me pleasantly and said, "I'm mama, and I'm reading." Then she continued to laugh and shake her head. (I guess I shake my head a lot too? I'm suspecting the gus-slappy-kicky contingent...)

Oh and she knows how to submit a post -- she knows she's not supposed to, but she knows how -- so if you see a rather nonsensical post from me with a lot of "mama"s and "papa"s in it, that's what's up. (And no peanut gallery comments on how nonsensical my posts usually are, please...)

:-)

More miscellany:

She's writing more and more. Yesterday evening she came up to us, gave us each a "card" (a post-it folded in half), and I opened mine to see "HI MAMA" and E.G. opened his to see "HI PAPA." Greeting cards! :-D

****

She really loves Neg Nog. No not Egg Nog, Neg Nog!

She's very emphatic on this point.

****

We were talking about hubby's car, and she sighed and said, "It's just too shabby. It's all... rusted... and the inside is, well, it's broken." All of this was said in a tone of high tragedy, with downcast eyes, sighs, and shakes of head.

****

We made gnocchi last night, and you know they're ready when they pop up on the surface of the boiling water. The water was somewhat opaque so it was hard to see them before they started to rise and became more clear. She said, "It's like a fog." I thought that was cool.

Then, when they were popping up more quickly, I said "Hello little gnocchi, we're coming to EAT you!" and she said, "No, no, they like it when you eat them. That's how they go home! [big Hallmark eyes] They go to the train stop [pats tummy] then go through the tubes, then they go *plop* into... another train stop... and then they go home!!"
