Zlitan, Libya (CNN) -- Firefighters battled a blaze caused by NATO airstrikes at a food-storage complex Monday in Zlitan, increasingly a front-line city in the conflict between Libyan government troops and rebels fighting to oust longtime ruler Moammar Gadhafi.
The firefighters doused burning sacks of flour with water after bombs punctured the high roofs of three facilities packed with flour, rice and cooking oil in Zlitan, on the Libyan coast east of Tripoli. An unexploded bomb lay buried in the concrete floor of one of the buildings, beneath a hole in the ceiling where sunlight streamed through.
Zlitan is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of the opposition-held port city of Misrata, and the front line between the rebels and pro-regime forces is somewhere in between the two cities. Smoke rising on the horizon and the rumble of artillery in the east suggested that by Monday, the fighting had moved closer to the city limits.
"It's continuous bombing, morning day and night," said Fathi Amar, who stood armed with a radio and camouflage uniform at the entrance to the burning storage center.

This ranks right up there with torturing prisoners. Way to show the world how great we are....

It may not be nice but war is not nice and destroying an enemy supplies including food stocks had always been a tactic of war.

WW1 came to an end primarily due to the allies being able to cut the German food supplies off to their population.

One example of tens of thousands examples in history of winning by cutting food or some cases water to your enemies.

EXCUSE ME!....according to NATO they are on a humanitarian mission to protect the civilians from Gadhafi. How does destroying food stores qualify?

@hawkeye10,
Well first when you start to used weapons of war no matter how smart those weapons happen to be civilians are going to be in harm way and I would bet a large amount of funds that those food supplies was going to keep the army in the field more then feeding the population of the city.

In any case, the best way is to used overwhelming force and get the conflict over in as short a time frame as possible something the West is not willing to do because of people like you crying over it.

Al Hamilton said in relationship to putting down the whiskey rebellion when the government need to used force to imposed it will the best manner of doing so is for the government to come on as a Hercules. The farmers in that conflict took one look at the forces coming in their direction and surrounded.

US Grand said we had been fighting this war “US civil war” for a numbers of years with great lost of lives on both sides but with little results and now I am going to spend whatever resources I need to in order to end this conflict.

He went on to prove his willingness to keep this word when in one battle he lost more men in an attack on Lee then Lee total forces facing him and instead of withdrawing he keep pressuring Lee until Lee needed to retreat.

There is no nice and clean way of using force and when you decide to do so the best and cheapest way in terms of total lives lost on both sides is to come down like the hammer of god.

@hawkeye10,
Just for clarification do you have a moral problem with taking this opportunity to removed Gadhafi and his family from power?

To me a civil war seem a good a reason as any to removed him from power even if in a saner world the 101 airborne would had jump in and hung him from a tree in Tripoli within weeks of flight 103 bombing back in 1988 and any numbers of times since for one misdeed or another of his.

Doing it in a slow manner we are currently going about it for political reasons have moral problems as a lot more Libyans are going to be kill and suffer then need be but it seem to be worth doing.
