Films as historical revelation are a laugh, generally speaking. This particular film did awaken me to the knowledge of Irish immigrants serving in the Army as a means to gaining citizenship, at the time of the Mexican War. It is the tale of soldiers being mistreated because they are new Irish in the LAND OF THE FREE and deserting to fight with Mexico against the USA. While not a great film, it has awakened in me a desire to know the whole story.
Another blot on our history of "legitimate" warfare, it did put us in an international tightrope walk similar to what we are experiencing today. Perhaps a case of damned if we do or damned if we don't but still mixed up with curiously warped politics. The record of our meddling in Mexican politics has been a failure ending in even worse despotic leaders ultimately taking over. Hmmm--can you think of any parallels?
I could probably strain a little and come up with some.
