@failures art,
I think that I may see your point but I do have a question for you.

I can only use a hypothetical question because I do not know of another way at the moment!

If you have a 12 + year old child of your own that seems to be experiencing thoughts that do not seem to map onto "what you would consider to be reality, would you attempt to change his/her thoughts by sharing information with him/her that may help him/her to see more clearly "Even if these beliefs were not harming other people?

@FBM,
Quote:
Alice: All Scotsmen enjoy haggis.
Bob: My uncle is a Scotsman, and he doesn't like haggis!
Alice: Well, all true Scotsmen like haggis.

When the statement "all A are B" is qualified like this to exclude those A which are not B, this is a form of begging the question; the conclusion is assumed by the definition of "true A".

Your formulation seems to imply that one cannot be a, for example, Buddhist unless one perfectly exemplifies all the teachings all the time.

My intention was to show that embarrassment was not required if they were either Buddhist or not and if one was Buddhist or not in any combination. I may or may not have succeeded in this.

To answer your point: I do feel that when someone e.g. a Buddhist acts in a way that is not Buddhist then for that period of time they are not Buddhist e.g. if a pacifist becomes temporarily violent then for as long as that lasts he is not a pacifist. If he renounces violence he can return to legitimately calling himself a pacifist once more. Not all Scotsmen enjoy haggis but all Buddhists meditate. It is a defining characteristic of being a Buddhist.

This is the same circumstance one encounters with predictably boring regularity from christian apologists. Confronted with examples of christians who do "bad" things, the apologist will simply say that they're not "true" christians. There are a sufficient number of christians sects that, had one nothing better to do, one could prove that there are no true christians.

Please see my reply to FBM.

Do you have a reason for this?

@Setanta,
I asked a question of you earlier but I can only guess you may have taken it the wrong way.
The reason I asked if you were a linguistic expert was because in another thread someone was speaking very highly of your ability to know the history of words and their meanings!

@igm,
Don't take it personal Setanta is just being Setanta. Even though he comes across a little emotional at times he does have good info to offer at times as well!

Thanks for trying to mitigate his remark but I still think he needs to give a reason though, as that would clarify why he made the remark for no apparent reason.

@igm,
He may give you a reason but I am just stating that some of his reasons seem to be emotional driven. Not all of them "some of them are without the emotions!

@reasoning logic,
This is typical of the type of drivel you post here. You have no idea what emotions, if any, i bring to my replies. You have no means of judging if there is any emotional content. This is just a feeble attempt to suggest that you are motivated by "reaonsing logic" (that tripe still cracks me up), while i am motivated by emotion.

Don't flatter yourself. You're nothing to me.
