laptop crashes too often

with blue screen.

I have a toshiba satellite laptop.

it crashes every 20 mins or so - or even sooner if i open too many pages, do too many things simultaneously.

but the catch is -IT ONLY CRASHES AT HOME WHERE I KEEP IN ON MY GLASS DINING TABLE.

it does crash in college, where the desks have a cool/cold sun-mica topping.

So its definitely a "heating" problem.

As it is toshiba satellite has a lousy heat release system. I have just ordered a heat sink on amazon.

But do any of you know any other surface that could help in the interim?? Maybe a slab of metal?? maybe a sheet of sun mica??

Did anyone ever have a similar problem of continuous blue screens - and if so how did you solve it? What are my options?

@brahmin,
For a temporary solution, get one of those laptop cooling fans/cooling pads. They actually work quite well. They allow the hot air to circulate away from the laptop where a countertop just traps the hot air and heats up eventually sending the heat back to the computer itself.

@brahmin,
I have a Toshiba, as well, and they do get blazing hot. When my cooling pad bit the dust, I got one of these...circulates air under the laptop and helps...a little.

@ehBeth,
I'll be needing a new computer soon and might get a desktop this time. I didn't want to invest in another cooling pad if I don't have a laptop.

Hmmm...maybe I could use it to cool my cookies Smile

@brahmin,
Have you tried booting in safe mode? If you can run it for long periods in safe mode, it could be a recently installed program that's causing the crashes. Have you installed any anti-virus programs recently?

Have you tried a clean install? You could try that (backup any files you don't want to lose first) and then add just one program at a time to see if there's a particular program that's the culprit.

Other than that, I'd probably find a Toshiba help forum and post the info you provided above and see what they say.

I'm on my second Toshiba. Neither gave me the blue screen, so I can't help you from experience. I'd buy another in a second, but I wish they made a desktop.
