(I realize it probably wasn't technically "Romantic" before then, but... seeds were sown!)

Ya know, PD, The Clouds and The Frogs are just brilliant . . .

During Dubya Dubya Two, the German commander in France, Von Rundstedt, was in the habit of referring to Supreme Headquarters (OKW) as volkenkukucksheim (probably horribly misspelled that) -- cloud cuckoo land . . .

"Are dogs self aware?"

Go straight to the source. I asked my friend's Malamute if it was self-aware.

He said "Well, I'm not entirely sure. How can anyone truly know the nature of reality and the extent of a conscious being? Would you like me to lick your face, just to see if I exist?"

I paraphrase, but only slightly, because English is a poor substitute for natural language.

What does *your* dog say?

Our previous beagle once caught a glimpse of himself in the oven door. He wouldn't stop howling / barking. I tried to show him it was himself, but he didn't get it. He stuck close to the wall after that when he had to enter the kitchen.

Our other dog was a beagle/terrier mix. She was very disturbed by any changes to her appearance. She liked looking at herself and didn't appear to think it was another dog.

Our current dog, Gracie, is another beagle. I don't think she knows anything outside of where the Bonz are located in the pantry and what time dinner is served.

Perhaps there is a range of awareness much like humans.

Sight is not a dogs dominant trait. As far as they are concerned, if they can't smell it then it's not there. They may consider us to not be self aware because we can't recognize our own scent.

My dog rubbed his butt on the carpet. He was panting happily and looked at me the entire time. He knew what he was doing.

If a dog does something dumb, and you laugh, you can see how embarrassed they are. If the stupid thing happened to have been tangling with a skunk, they are even more mortified when you won't let them into the house.

I've got 3 cocker spaniels and I would say they are definately self aware. They have displayed distinct reasoning powers rather than purely reactive behaviour and they certainly react in a way which indicates knowledge of cause and effect - on the colour question, I 'm not so sure but it doesn;t seem to bother them so does it matter - having recently seen the Mona Lisa it might as well have been in black and white for all the colour it showed!

Welcome Roobarb - don't mind Bi-Polar Bear - he is troubled becasue he believes he is really a South Polar being, in the body of a North Pole beast.
