according to "not starring" film site Steve turned down the role of The Sundance Kid because he couldn't get top billing over Paul Newman, since the two lead characters were of equal importance to the film what difference did it make?
Was he just being petty?

Maybe he didn't want to be uotshined by Paul.

Just guessing, it may have made a difference in their contracts as to how much they'd be paid and how much they'd receive in residuals and royalties.
I read somewhere that the billing order was very important , especially since the theater (outside) marquees in those days could only feature one star's name.
Yes, it was probably a big deal then.
