Changing password in Windows

I want to change my password for logging onto my computer. The Control Panel's User Account's page lists creating a password, on the menu, but doesn't mention changing a password.

I'm afraid that by using the Create A Password option I'll lock myself out of the computer because I can't remember my current password. I know this sounds foolish, but there you are.

For whatever unfortunate reason, I have all my passwords neatly saved - except that basic one. And occasionally I use other computers to access my account, so I need to have it available.

If I follow the instructions in User Accounts, will my new password be immediately functional?

If you have a password it should say "Change my password" not "create a password".

In additiion when listing the accounts it should say the account name and below it it will say "password protected" if it is, indeed, password protected.
