Thanks, fm and olga.
I never did dance, but I love dance music, very often.
I never got that close with Cajuns. Did work offshore at Houma one short time, perhaps thirty five years ago. I recall this Cajun that I payed to drive me to the helicopter pad had a flat tire. He was in really bad health, so I was the one took off his tire and wheel and we borrowed a man's boat so I could row us across the street to a station. The rowing was tough, on the way, but coming back I became an expert and we shot across the water, straight as an arrow.

Actually, I paid the man, rather than payed him.

@edgarblythe,
Every so often we would go over to Opelousas or "Big" Mamou for the zydeco goins opn every Saturday. They would be playin all over town and the big names would always be there sometimes. even Hank Jr would show up and do "lester's".

Big Mamou was the town name for the center of the Zydeco music world. I always thought that Mamou was a corruption of Mammouth for "Big plains". There were chieef Mamou and the Mamou area of Indians , but I ,ater found out the town was named for some French Guy named Mamou.
If you can find "La Valse de Grande Mamou"--thats like the first really big Zyeco song

HERES HANK JR doing LE GRAN MAM OU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CclzcoHL8Q

Terrific music.)

@msolga,
I met and sorta got to know Doug Kershaw who (in my estimation) created popular interest in Cajun music. Buckwheat Zydeco is probably my favorite commercial cajun/zydeco band.

Ambrose Thibodeaux was always my favorite. Here's a bit from his Two Step de Platin.

As you can hear he had a great rhythm feel on the accordion

Here's a guy who plays in the Thibodeaux style.

BTW edgar another great music thread from the master blaster.

@msolga,
last I knew Doug was running a cajun style restaurant in northern colorado. I haven't heard anything else is years; I think he might have quit the music industry. I really liked him personally.

I knew about Cajun music as a kid, sort of. The Dinuba radio station often played Jole Blon and Big Mamou. Then my Mom would tell me about it a bit.

@dyslexia,
I get confused at times over the distinction -
piano accordion vs fiddle, cajun vs zydeco.

(not knowing all that much yet) I'd thought they'd happily coexisted?
