Find the egg

A dozen eggs, 11 of which are of identical weight. 1 is a different weight but you don't know if it's heavier or lighter.
You have one of those balancing scales. You get 3 uses of the scale to find the egg of different weight. How do you do it?

This isn't a trick question or anything. It took me a couple of hours to get it.
