History if rife with examples.

Christianity, promising a better world to those who have nothing in this one, making them content with their miserable lot.

Capitalism, in which a few reap vast rewards by convincing all those who do not that they still have a shot at the top, if they just work hard enough.

Communism, in which true believers patiently wait for a golden age that is yet to come, while party insiders grow fat.

Wait a minute --that's just about everybody, isn't it?
