I used to be able to click on links in my e-mails , now they won`t open. I have windows xp, and I have done a system restore. I updated IE to IE 8 and started having this problem. Any suggestions PLEASE ?

Have you downloaded all the other Windows updates since March of 2009 when Internet Explorer 8 was first introduced?
If not, do so and try the links again.
