I've muddled around a bit trying to figure this out, but figured someone here would know the answer.

I want to take a virtual walk from my home to the Mitchell Corn Palace in SD.

I went into Google Maps, and found the route. I also went into My Maps to see if I can import that route into it.
Didn't seem to work.

I'd like to have a route mapped out, and each day, or every few days, be able to go in and use a marker to show my progress along the route.

Doesn't have to be Google Maps.

Ideas?

Use RunningAhead.com.

Once you sign up, go to "New Course". That gives you a map.
Find your starting point and click on it.
Find the place you've stopped the first day and click on that.
It plots the course and gives you your mileage.
Name it and save it.
Next time, go to "Courses" and find your course.
From the pulldown menu on the right, select the pencil for "Edit."
Go to the place where you finished your second day. Click.
Your course is extended and your mileage is updated.

Joe Nation tipped me off to it.
We use it to track our jogging mileage.

@George,
hmmm, that's the problem.

How do I tell where I stopped on a day?

I'd like to have the route mapped out, and be able to, for instance drag along the line from my start from the day before, to let's say, 3 more miles, and plop myself there.

The Mitchell Corn Palace is 931 miles from my house.

@chai2,
Do the route in increments.
It'll update the mileage as you go.
If you go too far, use the undo button up top.

A couple of years ago I mapped a virtual jog to Georgia.
I jogged 1,000 miles that year.

@George,
That's the problem George
I really want the entire route set out, so I can just mark where I am on it.

It would be a royal pain in the ass to add to the route every day.

oh well. Thanks
George

@chai2,
It's pretty fun actually, Chai.
The first year I decided to run to Canada and back from New York City. I looked at the maps on Google and figured out what would be a fun way to go. (I wanted to "run" through my old neighborhood in my Connecticut hometown.)
Once you get the route started and saved, it takes about one minute to add whatever mileage you've done. This year I'm running to my girlfriend's house near Hartford and back as many times as I can.

Try it for a week, http://www.runningahead.com/

"The Mitchell Corn Palace is 931 miles from my house."

This is an awfully long way to walk. Is it not possible to take a virtual train?

you might wanna be careful how you schedule your walk.

Well duh, how would I know when I've reached the Corn Palace?

How will I know when I'm approaching Car Henge?

How will I know when I'm near Cawker City, Kansas, home of the World's Largest Ball of Twine.

criminy tsar, I mean really, use your head.

@chai2,
something like this

http://walking.about.com/cs/measure/a/webwalkingusa.htm

Quote:
Go webwalking - chart your walking minutes, miles, or steps on a virtual walk across the USA on the American Discovery Trail.
This webwalking adventure covers 5048 miles - which you can complete as 5048 walking minutes, 504,800 steps, 504.8 miles, or 5048 miles. As you enjoy your fitness walking, you can follow along with the sights you would see on the trail. You can also fill in the segments on the printable map.

but with your particular start/end points?

Use the AAA trip planner maps. That's what I used to plan out my route and stopping points for my drive from CA to NM a couple years ago. You can get the big overview map like this one:

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_z2t3-2ANqrg/SX-rsXpM0jI/AAAAAAAAAxw/HlH7tNtrCno/s800/Map%20CA2NM%20route.jpg

As well as a detailed route printout that includes directions in text and small maps of each direction point.

The one I printed out for my drive was so detailed with maps and directions that it was about 30 pages long.

@Butrflynet,
Here's a Google document of the route I just created with the trip planner from Austin to the Corn Palace. You can do the same and insert your various rest stops along the way.

Here's the overview map:

https://docs.google.com/viewer?attid=0.1&pid=gmail&thid=12dc8ed5259429cc&url=https%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F%3Fui%3D2%26ik%3Df7195b5599%26view%3Datt%26th%3D12dc8ed5259429cc%26attid%3D0.1%26disp%3Dsafe%26zw&docid=562d00bb3deb7964a5833d305ed34c78%7Cfc9d7180f2b1b3e5333d2ff5ab552969&a=bi&pagenumber=1&w=770

The document also has all the many detailed local maps and written directions.

You can save the map online and go in and make adjustments to it each day to update your progress and destination points.

AH HA HA!
ALL YOUR BASE ARE MINE!

I figured it out.

ok ok ok.
here's a cut and paste of the directions I found...

Export Driving Directions

First create your route in Google Maps, and click ‘Link to This Map’
and select and copy the top ‘email’ link to the clipboard.

How, how you continue depends if you have more than one destination.
If you added more, or dragged the route to customise it then it will
actually contain many destinations, which the inbuilt KML export cant
cope with.

* If only a single destination can just append &output=kml to the end
of the url you copied, and use it in the import below.

* however if you have multiple destinations then I have a little
script to create a KML file that gets round the limitation.
...1. Goto http://www.nearby.org.uk/multi-to-kml.php
...2. Paste in the URL you copied earlier, and click Go
...3. Right click the “Download Google Earth KML File” link and copy
the shortcut to the clipboard, this is the url you can use in the
import process

===============================================

Import into My-Map

Create a new MyMap - or open a previously created one you want to
import into.

* Goto Edit mode on the Map
* Click Import top left of the editor window
* Paste in the URL you prepared earlier (remember to add &output=kml
if using the output direct from GoogleMaps) into the ‘enter the url of
map data on the web’ box.
* Click Upload
* Be prepared to rename your map, as often the import will name the
MyMap as per the file just imported

You end up with a map with no lines, but a yellow pushpin wherever there is a change in direction, change of street names, etc.

You click on the squiggle line on the top right of the map, and choose "draw a line along road"
As you drag, it show you how many feet/miles you have progressed!

It seems all you have to do then, is each time you want to update, you can extend the line.

Thanks everyone!

I'm on my way to the Corn Palace!

@chai2,
This whole virtual walking seems to me a goofy exercise.

I mean if you don't actually walk to a real destination then why bother with virtual walks.

You might as well virtually walk to the sun and back. Or Pluto and back. Or Alpha Centuri and back.
