why doesn't microsoft manufacture desktop or laptop?
yes, I know what microsoft means but I still wish they can create gorgeous PC to compete with Apple.
@curefix,
It doesn't fit their business model.
@rosborne979,
then the new question is what is their business model and why does making PCs not fit it?

They're a software company. Selling software is their business model. PC's are not software.
@rosborne979,
of course a pc isnt software... it seems to me that if microsoft were to sell their wonderful software exclusively on their own hardware they could make a lot more money. a business model is all about how much money you can get so why not sell hardware also
@HFgulliver,
But if they made and sold both, hardware and software producers couldn't have customer support for both producers passing the blame to each other when the stuff wouldn't work.
There is an easy answer to this question.
Once there were two companies. Apple, and Microsoft.
Apple saw itself as a computer company. They made software and hardware that worked closely together. Microsoft saw itself as a software company. They made software and licensed it to any hardware company the would pay up for it.
It turns out that Microsoft did pretty well for itself. It is difficult to argue with success.
@maxdancona,
Good point, although i could argue that microsoft just had better software (which i do by the way) and it was that, not their business plan, that gave them success.
