Arthur and Catherine were married in 1501 in Englad. What was the reason for their arranged marriage?
Politcal alliance, which was the reason for all dynastic marriages.
Well, it's a long story, and kind of a boring one. You see, Arthur had a club foot and nobody in the land would marry him, not even Cinderella, who hadn't even met Prince Charming yet. Catherine was kind of homely (ie she was butt ugly) and nobody in her land would marry her. They both had a royal obligation to marry and even though they were related (her father's second cousin's wife's brother's daughter-in-law twice removed was his sister), they saw some miniature portraits of each other which glossed over their obvious defects. In fact, Catherine is shown from the back, and Arthur was painted without his feet. They had hope, however, and petitioned the Pope for approval. He was very disapproving at first, but when they offered to bribe him, he okayed the marriage so they went ahead and got hitched. You shoulda seen their kids, though - wow.
@storm1228,
Arthur and Catherine Murray, the Dance Studio King & Queen, were THAT old? Yikes! Arthur was, for sure!
