What is the name of this movie?

I am trying to help my husband figure out the name of a movie we saw probably 20 years ago. Probably a movie made in the 1970's or 1980's. Not sure of the location but he said it seems like the people in the movie may have had an Australian accent. It's about a a couple of young guys who are street racers and they lose a race or maybe more than one and they end up camping out in the desert somewhere beside the road and they see a black 1957 chevrolet driving down the road without lights on. They end up discovering that a blind man who owns a service station nearby owns the car and the man helps them make their car faster so they can win races. I think the boys end up wrecking their car and the blind man ends up letting them take the '57 chevrolet back home to out run the other guys. Sorry this is a little "choppy" but it's been 20 years or so since he has seen this movie and it's a little foggy. Any help is greatly appreciated!
