I really need an electromagnet that can/ is :
+ pull a very heavy metal from above ( which means the electromagnet has to be very strong and very concentrated in one direction )
+ a energy-saver or uses little amount of energy

Guys , I need some helpful comments right now . Please help !!!!!

This site might help, I'm a little rusty, it's been a while since I constructed mine...

@hannahcarts,
Heres a good site. DO you know AMperes Law? and understand magnetic permeability? The equations will help get started.
Flat shape with many turns of a coil and a mag permeability of over , say 200, which is magnetic iron.

One or the other. Not both. No such thing as free lunch. (To lift large weight requires energy. Energy comes from electricity supply.)

@contrex,
Instead of jacking up yer amps, I think your teacher wants you to figure out how you can "get a cheaper lunch". Its really not too difficult. Look at the field equations, it should hit you.
Also, looking at the magnetic permeability portion, have you looked into a nickel iron alloy for the core?. Look up the mag permeabi;lity of Mu- Metal.
We used to use it for old analog (fluxgate) magnetometers

How heavy? Weight required please. Also how far above is the electromagnet?

Give required amount of energy.

I just had a thought... this isn't a perpetual-motion machine, is it?
