I used to use a spray can thing with an active ingrediant of something like pyrethrum. It was deadly on anything with more than four legs and was supposed to be safe on any warm blooded critter. Tried to find some in early fall though, and it was missing.
@Rockhead,
Two problems with spraying wood is that you get it on your hands when carrying inside and when you burn the wood, it becomes airborn and breathable.
@Rockhead,
Rock, maybe you can use a blower on your woodpile, then move it somewhere else? Spray new place first.
No matter what - do not eat any curds and whey while sitting on your tuffet!
