First Incident

Chapter 1

[For years I have dreamed of you Adam, years that have spanned for aeons.]
[Ever since we were parted by death, I have wept in the lonely dimensions.]
[I would give anything to be with you again in the Garden of Eden.]
[Anything…]

'Hello Eve,' a soft voice greeted her as Eve awoke from her dreams.

Eve opened her eyes slowly and was greeted by a blinding light, so bright that she had to shut her eyes and turn away before she opened her eyes again. This time what greeted her was beyond her comprehension.

She was in a room surrounded by giant, towering surfaces that rose into the light. Her legs were dangling from a raised platform of some sort that was supported by numerous gleaming things that resembled a tree but seemed to be unnaturally straight.

The thing that scared her the most were the strangely cladded figures that now surrounded her and her platform in a semi-circle. They stared at her and chatted to each other in low whispers as if they were talking a language Eve could not understand.

The seven bodies were dressed in some form of pale blue animal skin that looked so smooth and silky that Even wondered what animals they had slaughtered to obtain the skin. They wore similar objects on the top of their heads that concealed their hair and each wore strange white things over their hands.

Eve shrieked as they approached her and backed herself into the back of the rectangular platform against the colossal surfaces that held her prisoner inside the strange room.

'Do not be afraid Eve, everything here can be explained,' the voice that first greeted her before she opened her eyes came again. This time Eve noticed that the owner of the voice was one of the short figures that possessed green eyes.

'Who are you? Where am I?' Eve shrieked as they came closer and put her arms in front of her in a futile effort to shield her from them.

'My name is Hendrick Sammas and these are my colleagues. We are from an Institute in a place named Taxonise that specialize in the study of the human brain. You are an experiment we have conducted to insert the memories of Eve from the Christian Bible into the body of a cy...' Hendrick stopped abruptly as Eve scrambled off the bed and backed herself against the portable table that held the instruments Hendrick and his team were using before Eve woke up.

'Calm down Eve. We won't harm you. We are friends aren't we?' Hendrick didn't seemed to be effected by Eve's action. However, his eyes widened as he saw Eve pick up an operation knife from the utensil table and pointed the tip directly at him.

'This is a dream. This is all a dream! You aren't real. You aren't!' Eve screeched at Hendrick before he could open his mouth. Hendrick frowned and took a step forward to pluck the knife from Eve's hand. Eve whimpered as he approached but as Hendrick extended his hand to grab the knife, Eve spun and Hendrick coughed before he fell onto the floor as the blood flowed out of his stomach.

'Get back! Every one of you get back!' Eve screamed at the rest of the Institute's team and they backed away as ordered. Eve scanned the room frantically but she could not find any opening in the towering walls.

As she was looking around the room, one of the scientists made a break for the utensil table. Unfortunately, he did not have enough time to find a knife in the trays as Eve noticed him digging through each tray and his life ended as the knife pierced the back of his head.

'If anyone tries that again, you will all die!' Eve shouted at the remaining five scientists. They made the right decision and made for the door and bolted out into the hall leaving Eve staring stupidly at the opening that the scientists suddenly made as they opened the door.

She blinked and decided to worry about what exactly happened and headed out the door trying to find a way out of the complex...

Chapter 2

He stood in the ebony alley and observed the giant nodes of light created by the Taxonise Institute's mainstream of mother computers. Judging by the number of Wardens present in the mainstream, the complex was an important one. A grin appeared on the digitalized face as he realized what he had got himself into. Liberating Eve in such a secure area of the Network would be one heck of a challenge.

Jack Nemall was in the Interstellar Network, a network that consists of all possible electronic devices that spanned the sector the Human nation known as the World Union dwelled in. Its highways were data cables, it's streets power lines and its nodes were commercial computers. The network was like a parallel universe that the Humans could access at their wish by plugging connector cables into electronic devices known as DHANs - Data Highway Access Nodes, a device placed next to the brain that transferred the man into the Interstellar network.

Jack however was a different case. He had no real body and he dwelled within the Network. He was the master of penetrating government nodes; laying waste to the Gate Guardians and then whisking himself out with classified files before the security systems could be activated and the Wardens could hunt him down with their Eraser Blades.

Suddenly, a gleaming white node's hatch busted open. White nodes required the highest security clearance and were guarded by Gate Guardians known as the Larksoft Superintendent MKN-3, the toughest Gate Guardians ever developed and released commercially. Multiple glowing orbs of light came floating out the hatch. By it's color and size, Jack estimated them to be simple electronic tools that most surgeons carried around.

The orbs darted out into the dimly lit street and bolted down the street towards the central data highway. By looking at the way they moved, Jack decided that they were running away from something.

Eve.

Eve scrambled out the door and found herself in a tunnel. It was dimly lit by the same strange and blinding light source. Yet, this time, the walls of the tunnel surrounded and encased her on top as well.

She looked at the remaining five members of the team just as they disappeared behind a security clearance door. Having no idea how to operate it, Eve decided to take the other path towards the open end of the tunnel that lead into darkness.

As she cleared the corner, she suddenly dropped to the cold, hard steel floor as the blatant and high-pitched sound of the security alarm assailed her virgin ears. She withered on the ground in pain and looked down the tunnel searching for help. She could not see anyone within the tunnel.

She gathered up courage and removed her hands to bring herself upright again. After steadying herself, she dragged herself sluggishly along the tunnel towards the other end, which ended in another bend.

The security alarms suddenly cut off and she spun around in confusion. Why had the noise suddenly stopped? Then as she picked up a new noise, her blood ran cold. The heavy thud of a ponderous beast storming down the hallway beyond the corner made her back herself against the wall. As the sound got louder, she could pick out a sharp sound of metal scraping against the floor. Eve decided to take a look around the corner and as she did, her heart stopped in fright.

Three security MV-Cerberus automatons were storming down the hall towards her creating an even louder and ominous racket then the previous security alarms. The MV Cerberus models moved on four nimble hands that each had a mini-gun set into the palm. They had a circular body tilted at an angle of forty-five degrees and their ugly, metal-plated heads protruded from the top. The objects that Eve was most afraid of were the automaton's giant clawed fingers, which scarred the solid metal floor with the gentlest movement. Their shoulder plates supported multiple weapons such as a plasma shock cannon, anti-tank combustion missiles and a VSweeper scanner.

As they moved, they kept one of their shoulder mounted plasma shock cannons trained on Eve. Eve found herself covered with three red laser target pin pointers from the Cerberus' single, crimson, sensory eye.

-Escaped Cyborg Model Eve-2 Detected-

Eve jumped in surprise as she heard one robot mutter to it's companions. The voice that came from the core of the robot was a digital voice that seemed to rise irregularly in pitch as it pronounced each word. Strangely, the voice seemed familiar although Eve could not recall where she had heard it before.

-Roger-HQ Has Granted Permission To Open Fire If Target Shows Resistance-

Another notified it's companions. Eve noted that this automaton was different from the others. Its head plating was a dark sunshine yellow instead of the metallic silver the others wore. No matter now little knowledge she had of the future culture, Eve could immediately identify it as the leader of the group. Rather like how the leader of a group of animals usually looked different from its herd.

As they approached, Eve shrank back and pressed herself hard against the wall silently praying for the wall to just open up and swallow her. Eve knew that it was a hopeless reaction but she did not know what else she could do against the metal giants. So she simply let them cuff her without resistance and hung her head limply in shame as they dragged her away.

Jack frowned when he realized that the three dots galloping down the digital avenue were security systems. The answer then hit him. The Institute must have placed surveillance cameras inside the room Eve was confined in and immediately dispatched the Cerberus automatons when they saw Eve had broken out of the room.

He assessed the situation and smiled to himself. The Cerberus automatons were legendary stuff. One Cerberus was able to take on a whole squad of infantry marines and survive. When it ran out of rounds, it simply resorted to an even deadlier weapon: its claws. How the Institute got its hands on such expensive and rare robots was a mystery to Jack but one thing was for sure, Eve was a part of something big.

Jack's mind snapped back to the presence. He had always wanted to take on the legendary Cerberus robots, especially three. If he survived, he would be a legend. If he died then so be it.

Jack grinned as a plan popped in his head. A second later, he was out on the data highway and darting towards the security room's computer node before the Wardens even realized it.

As he arrived at the security node's hatch, he called up a program to cut a straight line through the hatch. As it did so, Jack jammed his hands into the gap the program had already cut and called up another program to rearrange the data in his hand into a crowbar. After the first program had finished the cut, Jack leaned on his hand and slowly forced the hatch open.

Suddenly, he felt a chilling presence behind his back. He turned around expecting to come face to face with a Warden but instead met a Serba N-15 Gate Guardian. Jack dropped to the floor just in time as the Serb flung its deadly and infamous chainsaw arm at Jack's head. The hand missed Jack's head by two inches and went straight through the hatch.

The Serb then called up a program and transformed it's right arm into a flame thrower whilst it pulled it's chainsaw arm out with little effort. Jack dived through the hatch a split second before a jet of fire scorched where he just stood a second before and called up a new program. This time, it covered Jack's body with a shining silver battle suit, Praetorian style.

'Bring it on you ugly **** wit,' Jack muttered under his breath before he made a full on charge towards the Serb. Such totally insane stunts and suicidal would only pulled off by professional Network Apparitions - Interstellar Network pirates and hijackers - like Jack.

The Serb was stunned by Jack's action but only for a second as it brought its chainsaw up and held it in Jack's path. Having known the Serb's reaction since it first moved it's hand, Jack gripped the handle on his fusion saber and sidestepped. The Serb aimed the flamethrower at Jack's face and fired. Jack sidestepped again but this time with help from the Praetorian personal thrusters concealed in the battle suit and avoided the fireball easily.

Jack pulled the fusion saber out of its sheath and sliced through the Serb's waist in one swift motion. The Serb let out a mechanical roar and fell to the ground, it's legs already rotting away into binary. Jack sheathed his saber and walked away from the scene.

Machines… They are all so predictable…

I like Sci-Fi. I might suggest actually drawing things out a bit more, slow down the pace of the story, and expand it to a novella, or a novel. You use a lot of histrionics that may not be necessary, like "she shrieked". It's more powerful if the reader is left to make decisions for themselves regarding a character's mood. Promising stuff. Keep it up!

Oklie doklie.

I was actually writing the chapters under some time restriction so I'll stretch them out now. Smile

EDIT: Chapter 2 has been rewritten...
