Cruise ship food - Why pop tarts and spam?

A cruise ship going to Mexico had a fire causing all electricity to go out. As a result there's been no food, no power, no electricity, no flushing toilets for 3 days.

We're eating spoiled turkey sandwiches and warm milk and warm yogurt," passenger Joey Noriega told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Thursday. "Everything smells like it's spoiled. ... Nothing's cooked. It's all sandwich meat. It's disgusting. You're afraid to eat it 'cause it's been left out and touched by everybody else on the ship."

The bathrooms are dark and toilets no longer flush, passenger Valerie Ojeda told "Good Morning America."

Still, she said people were trying to make the best of the trip, dancing, laughing and singing along to "Sweet Caroline." The bar was open and offering free drinks, and there were musical bands and children's games.

The navy sent in spam and pop tarts. Now why the h*ll would they send these items? Couldn't they send in some fresh fruit?

Because the navy ship was the "USS Ronald Reagan", an aircraft carrier - and not a supply vessel.

@Walter Hinteler,
Even more reason to question it.

Why is the U. S. navy provisioning its warriors with junk?

@Walter Hinteler,
And instead aircraft carriers carry spam and pop tarts just in case?

@ehBeth,
Maybe because the sailors wouldn't eat that crap.

@ehBeth,
do you have any idea how popular spam is in Hawaii?

@Linkat,
hmm, so that's why they had it to share?

could be

I still think they shouldn't have it on board. I don't think pop tarts are particularly good brain and muscle food.

@Linkat,
Spam belongs to the emergency rations in the US-Navy.

Well, they're kissing San Diego's ground right now - the ship is in San Diego
and passengers will contribute to our economy having great lunches and
hopefully a hot shower beforehand. :-)

Never ever would I go on a cruise ship - even before all this happened, but it
sure made it worse to even imagine what they've gone through.

I don't think our sailors get a lot of fresh fruit.

They sent stuff that would last without refrigeration, and could be prepared cold. Makes sense to me.

I had exactly the same questions. Answers were hilarious and probably dead accurate.

@roger,
Ask Georgeob, I understand he was somekind of habitue on an aircraft carrier. He may have some valid insite as to why we feed our kids garbage food like that.

@CalamityJane,
If I do, it would be on one of the higher priced more luxury type ones - not the lowest scale like Carnival.

@DrewDad,
But it was only 3 days .... and not too far from land .... doesn't seem hard to pick up some fresh fruit - that would last for 3 days.

@farmerman,
I'll ask hubby - he frequently took these as well when in the Marines - I believe it did on a trip to Alaska.

...So why didn't the cruise ship put into port?
